Light Dragon

The makers of Gon Kirin(literally, light dragon) wanted a sign to show off their ArtPrize voting number. I stepped up and produced this. It is entirely done by hand, using a soapstone line and an oxyfuel torch.

If you look carefully at the chest of the dragon, you can also see the gear ball logo that I made.

What’s in the box?

I found a present that I knew my friend would really enjoy, but because of the nature of our friendship, I couldn’t make it too easy for him. So I fabricated a box out of steel, put the gift inside, filled it with rocks and told him that what was inside was fragile and heat sensitive. The final product weighed 26 pounds.

I think he cherishes the memory more than the present.

Just one of the many reasons that I love GRMakers.

The people there are an astounding community of thinkers, tinkerers, and do-ers. I can honestly say that I don’t know what I would be like without GRMakers, it’s been a year of learning, growing and connecting. Some of my most trusted friends are people that I have met at makers.

If you consider yourself a maker in any way, I encourage you to check out https://www.grmakers.com/ and see how to get involved. If you are in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area, come out to the space for the free social on Wednesday nights from eight to midnight.
